A wonderful excerpt from Head's Proteus Redivivus, or the Art of Wheedling (1679) in which Head describes the increasingly lucrative business of bookbinding and how its craftsmen slowly yielded to the wealth and ease of bookselling, letting their tools rust in their leisure and wealth. As a bookseller and former bookbinder, I can't help but wonder what I've done wrong. Regardless, a wonderful keepsake, beautifully printed by Duncan Olmsted and Roger Levenson.
