Bingham was a staunch Unionist and supporter of Lincoln. This is assertive speech condemning Vallandingham call to end the war. Bingham responds: "Hence it is that the gentleman comes here to-day and tells us that the war ought to stop; that it should not continue a day nor an hour. His is for the Union he tells us, and against the employment of the only means by which the Union can be this day maintained, the armed power of the people themselves." Rare in commerce. Institutionally uncommon with only 17 libraries recording ownership according to OCLC. Sabin 5448.
