An apologist for slavery, McCord declares that the condition of Africans, even with Christianity present "the disgusting picture of a people, whose savage and shocking barbarities, and loathsome habits, and horrid crimes, are supposed to establish a condition so preferable to that of slavery to white man, that the fleets of civilized Europe and American, are employed to maintain and perfect them in it" (p. 28). Includes excerpts from: Abrege de l'Histoire generale des voyages. Paris, 1780-1801, an abridgment by Jean-Francois de La Harpe of the compilation by abbe Prevost; and from: Beecham, John, 1787-1856.
