Quarto. viii, 284 pp. Limited edition, one of 315 copies. As issued, in Holland cloth over boards with printed paper spine label. Printed on Batchelor's Kelmscott handmade paper in black with red headlines and prefatory note using the Golden type, the first of three typefaces designed by William Morris and used at the Kelmscott Press. Spine is worn; boards edges are also moderately to heavily rubbed; bottom corner of the front boards has been bumped and is weak; previous owner bookplate on the front pastedown and some adhesive residue on the front free endpaper; extra spine label tipped in to the front hinge; contents are clean. Possibly a binding copy.
Originally issued in 1889 by Reeves and Turner (Forman 109), this is one in a series of long prose romances or fantasy novels written by Morris. A stately edition printed under the direction of the Trustees of the late William Morris with all care necessary in order to assure that this and the other seven volumes from this series printed at the Chiswick Press were worthy to share a shelf with the works issued by the Kelmscott Press.
