New York: Hammer Creek Press, 1951. Original Wrappers. Near Fine binding. Item #9693

16mo. [2], 14, [2] pp., illus, map. Limited edition, number of copies unknown. Signed by John DePol. As issued, sewn into stiff gray wrappers with pressmark and border printed on the front cover; head-piece illustration of a turtle printed in yellow and blue; running header with small printed tree in black; center opening is a 2-page map of Lancaster County, PA printed in black with sienna border and hand-coloring. A beautiful copy with traces of toning at the extremities of the wrappers.

This copy from the library of printer Michael Tarachow, founder of the Pentagram Press, with his bookplate designed by John DePol inside the front wrappers. The Pentagram Press was active for nearly 30 years at the end of the 20th century. DePol has inscribed this copy to Merce and Michael at the colophon. DePol was a frequent contributor of illustration to Fass's press including several turtle pressmarks. The turtle pressmark that graces the cover, opening page, and colophon was not DePol's, but by another friend of the Press, Burton Carnes. A wonderful book with an exceptional provenance. Cohen 8.
