An interesting statement relating to the Mr. Sumner's role and opinions related to the resolution of the Alabama claims, the settlement between the United States and Great Britain over the English involvement on behalf of the Confederacy and the extent to which it prolonged the Civil War. Bancroft served on the joint high commission negotiating with Great Britain. Admitting that at the time of his writing, this issue was "no longer connected with the politics of the day, but has passed into history" (p. 3), he nevertheless lays out some careful argument against some of Sumner's positions and claims related. And interesting and careful argument by the jurist, diplomat, and politician. Uncommon in commerce.
