As issued, in cloth over boards with gray cloth shelfback but lacking the dust jacket; all plates and maps are present as called for; lacking the publisher's slip as usual. Spine is toned, otherwise a presentable copy; ghost of tape where an early bookseller's catalog description was taped to the front free endpaper; occasional brief pencil brackets in the odd margin; light foxing on and around the plates.
Nevins describes this as "[a]n exceptionally revealing collection of papers by a young Virginia aristocrat who served long and faithfully in a Richmond artillery battery" CWB I, 68. Harwell calls them "[c]harmingly candid letters of considerable interest" In Tall Cotton 21. Coulter 75.
