RECOLLECTIONS GRAVE AND GAY
New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1911. Hard Cover. Very Good binding. Item #7445
Octavo. [6], 386 pp. First edition. Publisher's cloth with title in gold on the front cover and spine; top edge gilt. Bottom corner of the front board is bumped; top edge of the rear board is bumped, otherwise a bright, fresh copy. Contemporary owner inscription on the front free endpaper; eventually this copy belonged to Eppa Hunton IV, grandson of Confederate Generals Eppa Hunton and William Payne; Hunton IV's name and address in pencil on the front pastedown. A few pages have scant pencil notes; clipping tipped in at the half title with expected offsetting, but largely clean but for some occasional foxing.
While the scope of the memoir is much larger, of note is the fact that Harrison was a resident of Richmond during the Civil War and has observations of the city, including an interesting letter dated April 4th, 1865 describing the city after its burning. Other letters of this sort offer similar insight into life in the South during the war.
