THE ARMY OF NORTHERN VIRGINIA IN 1862

Boston: Houghton, Mifflin, and Company, 1892. Hard Cover. Very Good binding. Item #7099

Octavo. x, 537 pp., frontis, maps. First edition. In original cloth; all 4 maps are present. A reasonably nice copy of this book with some wear to the extremities, including some light fraying at the spine ends and corners; small snag in the cloth at the fore-edge of the rear board; both joints are holding well but the rear hinge has some separation to the endpaper; contemporary owner name of Henry Alexander White, quite possibly the author of the "Robert E. Lee and the Southern Confederacy, 1807-1870." Scant and scattered pencil marginalia including on one of the maps; maps are in generally nice condition but one has a small, tasteful and early mend to verso. An presentably copy of what Nevins describes as, "[a]n early, balanced, documented study in detail of the operations of Lee's army in the year 1862; by a former officer under Jackson" CWB I, 21. Robert Krick notes, "William Allan does not received the attention he deserves as a contemporary historian of the Army of Northern Virginia" calling his history of Shenandoah Valley Campaign of 1862 a "classic" In Taller Cotton 4. Howes A-129 "aa."
