[Crusades, Holy War] THE HISTORIE OF THE HOLY WARRE

Cambridge: Printed by R. Daniel, for Thomas Buck, 1640. Full Leather. Very Good binding. Item #7046

Folio. [16], 286, [28] pp., map, plate. Second edition. Deaccessioned university library copy in early calf with simple tooling in gold and blind around the perimeter of the board and spine; Durham bookbinder's ticket on the front pastedown; engraved title page as well as folding map are present; lacking the blank leaf (Nn6) between the text and the chronology at the end. Both boards have been discreetly reattached and a recent morocco title label has replaced the original lost label; corners are rubbed and slight frayed; institution bookplates on the front pastedown and front free endpaper (the latter with deaccession stamp; evidence of a pocket and/or slip removed from the rear endpapers; institution stamp on the title page and on page 101 as well as a number stamp on the verso of the title page; occasional spotting or finger soiling to the text but by and large, a fairly clean copy; map has an early and tasteful mend to the verso. Originally issued the previous year, in 1639, Fuller's Historie of the Holy Warre was among the first modern histories of the crusades written in English and was arguably Fuller's first major literary and historical work. This copy with a series of contemporary and early owner's names in ink on the title page and the bottom of the "Declaration of the Frontispiece." ESTC S121254; Lowndes I, 847. Oxford Dictionary of National Biography.
