Binding is rubbed with fraying at the corners and spine ends; spine is a bit darkened; hinges are a bit loose, but holding; 20th century owner address label on the front pastedown; front free endpaper is chipped at the fore-edge; contents are largely clean with occasional foxing, spotting; and even toning.

This copy is boldly inscribed by the author on the recto of the frontispiece to Charles A. Briggs, esq. Uncommon with an inscription. Cowan notes that "the author visited California with the gold rush, arriving here in 1849"; a second and third visit is covered later in the autobiography. Cowan 419. Sabin 46175.
