12mo. 277, [1], [10 (ads)] pp., map, plates. First edition. In publisher's purple cloth with folding frontispiece map and ten engraved plates throughout, all present as called for. A solid copy with limited rubbing; spine is intensely sunned; small contemporary ink note on the verso of the first blank with some offsetting to the back of the frontispiece map; small moisture spot to the fore-edge of the textblock that has left a tideline to the outer margin about about a dozen leaves, not affecting text and not very off-putting; rear free endpaper is adhered to the final blank leaf at the top corner.

A popular genre in the mid-19th century, there were many of these guides to the springs of Virginia and other attractions. The author, Edward A. Pollard is most recognized for his many Civil War histories, biographies, memoirs, and the perpetuation of the Lost Cause narrative. Sabin 63879.
