POEMS. Sidney Lanier.

Philadelphia: J. B. Lippincott & Co., 1877. Hard Cover. Near Fine binding. Item #6861

12mo. 94 pp. First edition, state A (no priority). As issued, in green cloth with decorative title in gold on the front cover and spine; board edges are beveled; a circular device stamped in blind on the back cover. An exceptionally bright copy with little wear to speak of; contents are evenly and lightly toned else the contents are clean and tight.

This is the only collection of poetry by the Alabaman to be published in Lanier's lifetime; just a few years later later he would die of tuberculosis that he contracted while in a Union prison at Point Lookout, Maryland during the Civil War. Uncommon in any condition, this is a stunning copy; one would image it is as good a copy as one might find. BAL 11249; Oxford American National Biography.
