Octavo. xii, 13-135, [1 (contents)] pp. Second edition. As issued, stitched in printed wrappers; lacking the rear wrapper. Front wrapper at the spine is a little chipped; some loss to the paper over the tail of the spine.

This copy belonged to Eppa Hunton IV, grandson of Confederate generals Eppa Hunton and William H. Payne; Hunton IV's stamp on the front wrapper as well as over the text on page 49. Occasional marginalia in both ink and pencil, Hunton IV was in the habit of locating his ancestors' names in the text and underlining them with a note. “The first memoir by a caustic Confederate general, this work was incorporated later--with marked revisions--in Early's Autobiographical Sketch” Nevins I, p. 84; Dornbusch III, 1709; Howes E-14.
