Octavo. xxvi, 244 pp., frontis, facsims, maps (endpapers). First edition, signed by Durkin on the verso of the half title. In publisher's cloth but lacking the dust jacket. Light wear to the binding including some softening to the corners and spine ends; light tideline to the bottom corner of the frontispiece else clean. Though without indication, this copy from the library of the family of Eppa Hunton and likely first belonged to Eppa Hunton IV, grandson of the Confederate General and U.S. Senator of the same name. Nevins writes, "The revealing and penetrating observations of August, 1862-July, 1863, campaigning with teh Army of Northern Virginia; the cultured Dooley was a member of the 8th Virginia" CWB I, 82.
