Philadelphia: J. B. Lippincott & Co., 1872. Hard Cover. near Good binding. Item #6519

Octavo. 320 pp. First edition. In publisher's cloth. Heavily worn with significant fraying at the spine ends and corners; hinges are loose but holding; penciled name of Mr. M. Forbes at the top of the title page and contemporary ink name of John M. Forbes at the top of the dedication page. Scattered but intermittently heavy pencil marginalia which is thoughtful. Fairly uncommon in the trade, this is an interesting history of the United States by a Virginia Governor and Confederate General. The scope is from the American Revolution to the 1862 and speaks to the foundations and the opening years of the American Civil War, necessarily from a southern slant. Haynes 21653.
