Providence, RI: B. Wheeler, (1796). Original Wrappers. Good binding. Item #6489

12mo. [24] pp. As issued, stitched in self-wrappers. Expected wear to the pages including some notable closed tears and rubbing to the covers; contemporary ink notes and markings in the margins including the partially decipherable name on the front cover "Ruth Brown [?] / Born July [?] / 1797." An interesting early almanack with wonderful woodcut border and United States Seal on the front cover. Drake 12956. Laid in is a $10 bank note from Burrillville Bank in Burrillville, RI and is dated January 7, 1832 with signatures by Samuel Ashby, Jr. (cashier) and John L. Clark (president). Interesting to note that the bank failed just months after this note was issued. Clark absconded with records that implicated him but was ultimately caught and arrested. Clark's part in a nefarious saga concluded with his suicide at the age of 31 in 1836 (Printers and Printing in Providence, 1762-1907). Remarkably little wear to the note; quite fresh.

Price: $175.00
