Binding is rubbed with fraying at the spine ends and corners; prominent dampstaining along the top margin throughout the textblock as well as the bottom edge; heavy tidelines to the frontis; frontispiece and 8 plates (as called for by Howes) are present. "An uncritical study by Johnston's son (himself a Confederate soldier); contains much quoted material" CWB II, 68. Though without indication, this copy is from the library of the family of General Eppa Hunton and certainly might have been General Hunton's own copy. Pencil notations in the margin throughout.
