Londini [London]: Gulielmus [William] Pickering, 1831. Hard Cover. Very Good+ binding. Item #6363
9.5cm x 6cm. , 351; , 272 pp., frontis. Diamond Classics edition; first edition, thus. In publisher's red cloth with printed paper title labels on the spine. A remarkably bright set with only some minor wear to the label of the Iliad. Contents clean and bright; small closed tear to the fore-edge of the front free endpaper of volume I; frontispiece of Homer in Volume I is bright and clean bearing the 1831 date at the bottom; penciled bookseller notes on the front endpaper; both volumes bear an early ownership name, "H. M. Leach" in pencil on both front flyleaves and the modern book label of American collector Albert A. Howard on the back pastedown.
These volumes exemplify miniature books at their very best, with all the proportions one would find in traditionally sized books and all the quality in printing and design that one would expect from Pickering. This is a stunning set, well preserved. Contrary to Keynes the labels bear a 12s price rather than the 9s Keynes notes. He does identify a large paper copy (a charming notion for a miniature book) with a 12s price, but this is not the large paper copy. Text in Greek. Keynes, p.72; Welsh 3412 & 3413.
