THE ELEMENTS OF EXPERIMENTAL CHEMISTRY (The Fourth American, from the Seventh London Edition, Greatly Enlarged)

Philadelphia: James Webster, 1817. Full Leather. Good binding. Item #6284

Octavo. xxx, [2], 656, xcv pp., plates, folding table. Fourth American edition. In marbled calf with red morocco title label on the spine. A handsome binding with trivial shelfwear; contemporary owner name and bookplate of William E. Allen on the front endpaper and title page; evidence of early moisture exposure to the textblock, with occasional tidelines, faint waviness; foxing and toning throughout; occasional pencil marginalia scattered throughout. Despite its faults, it presents well on the shelf and is a better than serviceable copy of an early American edition of Henry's important contribution to chemistry. Originally issued in 1801, this work sprang from a series of lectures in 1798-99 and was often reprinted and updated. While Henry was careful to avoid scientific controversy, in his work he was scrupulous at recording experimental results and illustrating pieces of laboratory apparatus. DNB; Shaw & Shoemaker 41034.
