A solid copy in a moderately soiled binding; corners bumped on the back board; spine a trifle darkened; dust soiling to the deckled fore-edge; contents clean. Martin writes in the introduction, "The object of this volume is to call attention to the genius and character of the distinguished Southern Senators of antebellum days" (p. 7). Krick describes, "There are six lengthy speeches reproduced, by such Southern Senators as Davis, Benjamin, Toombs and Slidell. Four celebrated debates are also entered. Martin's only original contribution of any consequence comes in the form of three chapter-long biographical sketches, of Judah P. Benjamin, Edward Dickinson Baker and John C.
