Philadelphia: Carey and Hart, 1840. Hard Cover. Fair binding. Item #5998
12mo. 199; 211 pp. First American edition. As issued, in publisher's cloth backed boards with printed paper title label on the spine. Generally worn and soiled with scattered foxing throughout both volumes. Volume I is at least a solid copy, while Volume II has a broken front hinge. Contemporary owner name on the front free endpaper of both volumes. Originally issued in three volumes by Blackwood and Son in 1839, this is the first American edition of these two of six volumes. Remarkably uncommon to find a complete first edition set, UK or American of what went on to be a remarkably successful and popular novel.
