Glen Allen, VA: Cussons, May & Co, 1900. Hard Cover. near Very Good binding. Item #4757
12mo. 99 pp. Third Edition. Rebound in black imitation leather with title stamped on the spine; wrappers bound in; at the time of binding, there appears to have been some subtle paper repair, largley to the inner margin of the first dozen leaves--discreet; front wrapper has been subjected to some aggressive erasing resulting in a faded spot; private library stamp on the title page; top corners of the title and dedication page are chipped; contents are otherwise clean; a tasteful rebinding. Originally issued in 1898 a collection titled, “Glance at Current History,” where it was reprinted once, but this third edition is the first edition separately printed. Largely, a response to Goldwin Smith's History of the United States, Cussons takes a firm, stance “that the full measure of America's greatness could be achieved only beneath a single flag, [while being] equally firm in the conviction that a true spirit of national unity will never be attained by a distortion of historic truths.” Nevins II, p. 9 (first edition).
