Richmond: Shepherd & Colin, 1843. Hard Cover. near Very Good binding. Item #4561

Octavo. [4], 79-388, [2] pp. Recently removed from library buckram and neatly rebound in cloth with printed paper spine label, original wrappers bound in. Library perforation stamp to the title page and catalog number on the verso of the title (stamped, “withdrawn”); scattered foxing throughout, heavy at times, but largely light. A portion of the reports were through-paginated--this eighth report is complete. While the Kanawha Canal was not the company's only endeavor, it was the most significant--Virginia's attempt to access western trade via a canal that linked the James River with the Ohio River and ultimately the Mississippi River. It was only partially completed, but was nevertheless an important waterway in ante-bellum Virginia. This is an uncommon and early report of the company that was begun in 1785 and after several incarnations, incorporated in 1835. (Dunaway, Wayland Fuller. History of the James River and Kanahwa Company).
