SPEECH OF MR. A. H. STEPHENS, OF GEORGIA, ON THE LAND BILL. Delivered in the House of Representatives, U.S., July 7, 1846.
Washington: printed by J. & G.S. Gideon, 1846. Original Sewn Wrappers. Good binding. Item #4363
Octavo. 15, [1 (blank)] pp. As issued, stitched into original printed wrappers; some age-toning; previous owner name of “Hon. W. Wright” boldly inked on the rear cover--very likely, the copy belonging to Representative William Wright of New Jersey. Wright also served as Mayor of Newark (1840-1843) and U.S. Senator (1863-1866). Public lands, especially in the "western states" was an "on again, off again" question for legislators in the period 1828-1860. Here the question was whether to sell public land that had been on the market for a decade or more on a decreasing scale of value per acre.
