VIRGINIA. PREHISTORIC AND ANTEBELLUM; Part First: Uncle Yorke
Danville, VA: Dance Brothers Company, 1899. Original Wrappers. Good binding. Item #4001
12mo. 119 pp. Gray wrappers with title stamped in gold on the front cover; fairly fragile binding, particularly at the front joint and first signature. While a work of fiction, this is among that genre of vernacular history told through the lens of a freed enslaved person (Uncle Yorke in this case) in the early 19th century who recounts stories of Washington's time, Bacon's Rebellion, and "Indians." As one would expect, written in an offensively, heavy-handed dialect. Uncommon. Hayne 4789.
