Arboretum et Fruticetum Britannicum; or, the Trees and Shrubs of Britain . . . (8 Volumes, Complete)
London: printed by A. Spottiswoode for the author and sold by Longman, Brown, Green, and Longmans, 1844. Cloth. near Very Good binding. Item #11620
Octavo. ccxxx, 494; x, [495]-1256; vi, [1257]-2030; viii, [2031]-2694; viii, plates, 1-104; vi, plates 105-214; vi, plates 215-309; vii, [1], plates 310-412, [8 (index to plates) pp., plates, illus. Second edition. In publisher's cloth. Generally a very nice set despite a couple of the bindings having evidence of a previous owner having discreetly colored rubbed areas (evident but not distracting); Volumes I and VIII have had some amateur repair to the spine; otherwise expected edgewear, but solid copies; but for private library stamps "Library of Monhonk Lake" on the front endpapers and title page along with a previous owner name, "William Kelly," the contents of the text are clean; one volume of plates has very minor tidelines to the top margin of a couple dozen plates, otherwise, it is notable how clean and free of foxing these plates; a well preserved set of an important and encyclopedic work on British trees and shrubs and undoubtedly the masterpiece of the Scottish botanist John Claudius Loudon.
