Octavo. xiv, [2], 331, [3 (adverts)] pp., illus. First edition. As issued, in publisher's cloth with pictorial paper pastedown on the front board. Binding is worn and soiled including early pencil scrawl (which can be found on at least one leaf in the text); binding is a bit loose, but generally a serviceable copy.

Educated in aviation engineering, Loening was an early and important contributor to the field. This present title is the published form of Loening's thesis. In 1912 he was the chief engineer of Queen Aeroplane Company of New York. The following year Orville Wright hired him as assistant engineer for the Wright Company in Ohio. But that was just the beginning moving forward and upward, he was a force in early aviation. This collection of his lectures first published in 1915 was an important textbook and in both the United States and Great Britain, often reprinted. Oxford American National Biography. This copy is from the library of E. M. Nutting and bears his name on the title page. Nutting himself was an early aviation engineer.
