[Broadside] Dog's Death

Cambridge, MA: Adams House and Lowell House Printers, 1965. Broadside. Item #11538

Broadside, 13-1/2" x 10-3/16." Limited edition, number 93 of 100 copies, signed by Updike; this copy inscribed to Takashi Teramaye. Minor toning around the margins, particularly towards the bottom margin. A a crisp copy in Very Good+ condition.

An uncommon broadside and an early poem by Updike. The Winter 1977 issue of the John Updike Newsletter in which it is reproduced on the final page speaks of its rarity. Whether it remains "one of the rarest Updikeiana" or not, it is certainly an important piece in that it is Updike's first broadside. The edition was signed by Updike at the colophon in the bottom margin, but this one is anomalous in that it is not signed at the colophon, rather it is signed and inscribed to Takashi Teramaye at the top. De Bellis and Broomfield A15.a.
