Eudora Welty: Photographs

Jackson, MS: University Press of Mississippi, 1989. Cloth. Near Fine binding. Item #11267

Quarto. xxviii, [178] pp., illus. Limited edition, number 24 of 375 copies, signed by Welty. As issued, in full cloth with slipcase. A beautiful, unworn copy in similarly sharp slipcase.

While principally known for her writing, Welty was an astonishingly powerful photographer. Many of the photographs are from the 1930s when she was working for the WPA, prior to her first published story. There is a remarkable throughline in Welty's artistic output--it is her focus on Mississippi and the South. While not all of the photographs herein are from the South, most are, offering a remarkable picture as powerful and moving as Lange's or Evans's. This monograph contains 226 photographs on 174 pages and is the most comprehensive collection of Welty's work. This belonged to Ray A. Roberts, Welty's friend and sometimes editor. His bookplate on the front pastedown. Polk A36:1b.
