A Treatise on Martial Law, and Courts-Martial; As Practised in the United States of America
Charleston, SC: J. Hoff, 1809. Half Leather. near Very Good binding. Item #11013
Octavo. 6, 5-6, 5-340 pp. First edition. Lacking half title, else complete, despite the erratic pagination which comports with Sabin. Bound in later morocco backed boards with corners. Binding just a trifle rubbed, but presents very nicely; title page with notable loss to the top margin, perhaps removing an owner name(?); early dampstaining to the outer edge of the first third of the book; very occasional pencil notations; one instance of an stray ink blot in the inner margin, not affecting text; non-authorial presentation inscription on the first blank; a modern bookplate on the front pastedown; and the tail of the binding bears the name of a previous owner in gilt. Most interesting of the abundance of provenance markings, an early ink stampe on the final leaf: "Compy. H 4th, Arty." Difficult to date the stamp, but early- to mid-19th century. The regiment was organized in 1821 and was active in Florida and the South in the first half of the 19th century. Shaw & Shoemaker 17964; Sabin 43611.
