Swallow Barn, or a Sojourn in the Old Dominion, in Two Volumes (Complete)

Philadelphia: Carey & Lea, 1832. Hard Cover. Very Good binding. Item #10951

12mo. x, 312; vi, 320, [36 (publisher catalog)] pp. First edition. In publisher plum muslin spines and paper over boards; printed paper title labels on the spines. Spines are sunned; expected wear and some soiling to the boards; contents with varying degrees of foxing throughout ranging from moderate to quite light; one leaf in Volume II with loss to the top margin that touches the running header and page number; contemporary owner name John J. Moore dated 1832 in pencil on the bottom margin of p. 40; both volumes have later 19th century armorial bookplates of Charles A. Woolley on the front pastedown.

While this is Kennedy's best known literary work, he was also a United States Congressman and the United States Secretary of the Navy in the Fillmore administration. Uncommon novel in any form, but particularly in publisher's boards. Despite the expected wear from age, this is a pleasing set. BAL 11040; Wright I, 1569; Haynes 9961.
