Defence of Battery Wagner, July 18th, 1863: Addresses Delivered before the Confederate Survivors' Association in Augusta, Georgia, on the Occasion of its Fourteenth Annual Reunion
Augusta, GA: Chronicle Publishing Company, 1892. Quarter Leather. Very Good+ binding. Item #10938
Octavo. 30, [1], [1 (blank)] pp. First edition. Issued in wrappers, here bound in marbled paper over boards and backed in calf, original wrappers are bound in. A lovely binding with only trivial rubbing; very minimal and shallow chips to the wrappers; light and even toning throughout. A very nice copy.
While Jones gets top billing, his are only introductory remarks, while the principal address is by Twiggs in which he offers a fairly detailed account of the background, build-up, and defence of the fort on Morris Island at the opening of Charlestown Harbor. This copy is from the library of notable Civil War and Americana collector Charles Sanders, Jr, with his bookplate on the rear pastedown. Dornbusch III, 2467; DeRenne 903; Turnbull IV, p. 308.
