History of the First and Second Missouri Confederate Brigades. 1861-1865. And from Wakarusa to Appomattox, a Military Anagraph
St. Louis: Bryan, Brand & Company, 1879. Embossed Cloth. Very Good binding. Item #10916
Octavo. 480, 27, [1] pp., frontis, ports. First edition. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper. In original cloth. Some rubbing to the extremities of the binding; some discoloration along the top of the rear board; previous owner name stamp on the front pastedown; tidelines to the margins of the four portraits, but the text is completely free of such markings; scant and scattered light pencil bracketing and underlining as well as a penciled index of names/page numbers on the rear endpaper.
While it certainly bears some faults, this contains some solid accounting of the Confederate army in the Trans-Mississippi. The second part of the work: From Wakarusa to Appomattox, contains Bevier's memoirs from his diary that were printed serially in various regional publications. An uncommon book to find inscribed, this copy is "Presented to / Mrs. Mary Gray / By her Friend / The Author / Dec. 15, 1878." This copy is from the library of notable Civil War and Americana collector Charles Sanders, Jr, with his bookplate on the rear pastedown. Howes B-412 "aa"; Dornbusch III, 1228; CWB I, 59.
