Vashon Island, WA: Suzanne Moore, 2015. Original Wrappers. Fine binding. Item #10910

Folio. [22] pp., illus. Limited edition, letter K of 26 lettered copies. Signed by Moore at the colophon. As issued in golden painted Magnani paper, with the letter "A" free-hand tooled in gold on front cover of the book, rather abstract as if alluding to bamboo. Interior made up of Revere Book and BFK Rives paper, with interleaves of Asian papers. Painted textured paper protective wrapper, with diagonal overlay and tab/slot closure create the letter "A" on the cover, with freehand silver tooling. Hand-work for binding and wrapper by Gabby Cooksey.

Calligrapher, lettering artist, and book maker, Suzanne Moore presents an engaging exploration of the letter "A." More than two dozen variations using hand-lettering, hand-coloring in gouache and pencil, collage, debossing and gold leaf, all accompanied by Jessica Spring's fine letterpress work at the Springtide Press. The variations range from heavily stylized and abstracted to the traditional Roman letterform. These are presented in a number of ways, from a single letter on a page, to stacked or lined on a page, to spilling off a page and onto the next. Each book concludes with a striking "finale" page—a unique (gouache) hand-colored monoprint of an array of A letterforms from different African languages. While it is a playful book and a joy to explore, it is simultaneously a serious calligraphic study.

Also available in a deluxe copy, created with teaching collections in mind. This deluxe copy is boxed and includes the book, as described above, with an additional portfolio of annotated process materials including concept and design notes and sketches. Experiments with various techniques and materials illustrate the path leading to solutions in designing and making the book. The process portfolio includes 20+ annotated items, prints and original process work, enclosed in a painted paper wrapper, both enclosed in a clamshell box with painted liners, suggesting the simplest form of a capital A.
