A remarkable history, and one that Howes calls the "best general history of the state" (Howes B-755). Owen, in his Bibliography of Alabama echoes Howes writing, "This book must be regarded as the most valuable general contribution to the history of the State yet made" (Owen, p. 842). Brewer offers of a county by county history of Alabama that comprises the lion's share of the book. The final hundred pages is dedicated to Alabama's role in the Civil War. In his assessment of important Alabama books Rucker Agee writes, "With a dearth of complied source material, Brewer undertook the stupendous task of organizing a brief sketch of each regiment of infantry and cavalry—with the names of their field officers and staff officer, the names of each captain, and the counties from which their companies came, plus similar information as to each battery. . . . afford[ing] valuable reference material" Agee, Twenty Alabama Books, p. 81-2. Uncommon in commerce. Brannen 87.
