Octavo. xx, 165, [1], 458, 35, [1] pp. Second edition. In contemporary sheep with morocco title label on the spine. Rear board is detached; binding is quite rubbed; contents are generally solid, though there are a few leaves that are pulled and one bifolium that is detached and laid in; complete; moderate to heavy foxing and with a number of leaves dog-eared.

Originally issued by Tucker in 1831-2, this is the second edition with the second volume having been issued in 1837 (not present, here). Tucker was a notable Virginia figure: a U.S. Representative, VA Senator, and judge in turn. He established the Winchester Law School in 1825 and taught until 1831. It was the largest in the commonwealth at the time, drawing students from Massachusetts to Louisiana. Tucker's Commentaries comprises a more formal presentation so his teaching notes and was a significant resource for members of the Virginia bar. It was printed three times over two decades. Oxford American National Biography. Pervious owner names include contemporary inked name of R. D. Buford on the front pastedown and the penciled Wm. Smith Lewisberry (or Lewisburg) on the first blank and again on the title page. American Imprints 40604.
