[London?]: 1710. Hard Cover. Very Good binding. Item #10232
Small octavo. 109, [3] pp. (A-G8). Self-styled, "Editio Nova & ab Auctore correcta." Contemporary plain paper over boards; edges speckled red. Spine worn with partial loss; light wear at the extremities; old bibliographical note in ink on the verso of the front free endpaper; title page a trifled toned and only minor foxing to the text. Generally, this is a pleasing copy.
A singular writer, Beverland's work had a distinct preoccupation with lust, sex, and sin—a preoccupation that ran him afoul of the Dutch Reformed Church. At some point after being exiled to London in 1680, Beverland began writing this apologistic work, presenting himself as a repentant libertine, whether for show or in truth. While this edition bears no place, it is likely printed in London. A rare edition of this work on chastity. Gay/Lemonnyer notes a 1689 edition, though, no other bibliography identify such an edition, neither do any institutions report ownership according to OCLC. Only the 1697, 1698, and this present 1710 edition are identified. None are common. Gay/Lemonnyer I, 794.
