Narratives of the Shepherd of Salisbury Plain [and] the Mountain Miller; and George Vining
New York: American Tract Society, c. 1842. Quarter Leather. near Very Good binding. Item #10219
12mo. 47, [1], 34, 16 pp. frontises. In contemporary marbled paper boards backed in straight-grained morocco. Binding a trifle rubbed with some separation starting along the front joint, though the board remains quite solid; edges rubbed; expected toning/foxing throughout; gift inscription and previous owner name and date in pencil on the endpapers. While the book is undated and sources we've consulted range from the 1830s through the 1850s, the owner date is 1842, and it is from this we've derived our approximation of publication. An absolutely charming binding with strikingly bright marbled papers that range from orange and red to glue and green. It appears as though after being marbled the paper was brushed with a series of color washes in stripes. Though the boards are a bit rubbed, it remains a very nice series of moralizing children's tales in an appealing binding.
